The new Katherm HK E: individual climate with a 2-pipe system too

The Katherm HK range

Katherm HK are the ideal choice when you need to air condition spaces with floor-to-ceiling windows and create a comfortable indoor climate. The market-leading Kampmann Katherm range impresses with its outstanding performance coupled with minimal sound power levels.

Electricity combats downdraughts

Some people prefer a room to be warm, others don't. But a 2-pipe system only lets you either heat or cool. Up to now. The built-in electric heating coil enables users to configure their own indoor climate, regardless of whether the central system is set to heating or cooling mode. Using electricity to combat downdraughts, as it were. The following functions can be realised with the Katherm HK E 2-pipe system:

  • cooling with CHW (chilled water)
  • heating with the built-in electric heating coil
  • heating with LPHW (low pressure hot water)

Sustainable: 2-pipe solution with 4-pipe comfort

The new Katherm HK E trench heater stands out in terms of its functionality and its sustainability. It provides the comfort of a 4-pipe system at the cost of a 2-pipe system. The use of these trench heaters means that there is no need for the complete material cost of routing pipes for a 4-pipe system in the floor and riser including all fittings and valves. This significantly saves the cost of materials, raw materials, not to mention installation time and commissioning costs. And the lower CO2 emissions along the value chain also help to protect the environment. The reduced CO2 emissions have a positive impact on the carbon footprint of the building.

How are Katherm HK E units used within an office building?

In summer, the entire system is centrally set to cooling mode. There is generally a constant demand for cooling and all the users are satisfied.

Situation: 2-pipe system on a floor in an office building.
All the offices are set to cooling mode using CHW chilled water. Users: satisfied

During the shoulder months, some people start wanting to heat their offices. Central control of the system prevents them from doing so. So not all the users are satisfied.

Situation: 2-pipe system on a floor in an office building
All the offices are set to cooling mode using CHW chilled water. Users: some are satisfied/some are dissatisfied

It is precisely for this scenario that the Katherm HK E was developed. Users can now individually set their own indoor climate without changing the central setting of the system to LPHW heating mode. Users who wish to heat their offices can individually switch on the built-in electric heating coil. It is controlled by a room thermostat. Electric heating coils can be individually switched on for each office, while the central "cooling" setting reigns in all the remaining offices.

Situation: 2-pipe system on a floor in an office building
Offices are cooled with CHW chilled water and heated by an electric heating coil. Users: satisfied

As soon as the outside temperatures require all offices to be heated, the central system switches over to LPHW heating mode. The electric heating coil remains inactive.

Situation: 2-pipe system on a floor in an office building
All the offices are heated by LPHW. Users: satisfied
